Aboriginal Bark Paintings

Traditional bark artist Gary Djorlom removes a sheet of bark from a stringy bark tree.
During the wet season the bark is easily removed. The tree trunk which has been hollowed out on the inside by termites is used to make hollow log coffin poles. Which are also highly decorated.
The bark is heated , flattened and dry pressed in preparation for painting on with natural earth pigments and fixative.
